History - Professional Ranks

The club, from the beginning, also gained the services of a Professional, in the shape of one Albert Haskins. Haskins had offered his services as professional, coach and grounds-man. He volunteered to work for nothing if the committee were not satisfied with his work, an offer they couldn't refuse? Haskins remained as the Professional for 40 years, moving from the Wirral and taking up residence at No. 1 Hartington Road, West Derby. Albert had a long and happy association with West Derby eventually retiring back to the Wirral to purchase property and open a sports shop.

He was replaced, in 1936, by a young James Henry Rudd or ‘Harry’ as he was known to all and sundry. ‘Harry’ was quite a task master on the teaching ground and the young colts who had lessons with him on a Saturday morning, had another name for him. It is still said that you can tell a Rudd taught swing, even at a distance. Harry had just played in the 1936 British Match Play Championship, beating no less that the great Henry Cotton. No doubt it was this that tempted the Committee to sign him up out of the 70 applicants they had for the job. Harry retired as professional after 38 years service, falling just short of Albert Haskins 40 years. His retirement was hastened due to a problem with the tendons in his hands; probably through gripping golf clubs most of his life.

After Harry, a number of fine young pro's came and went, amongst them George Pilkington, now at Herford GC in Germany, Iain Runcie, now at Abergele GC and Brian Seddon, now at Hillside GC. Our current professional is Andrew Witherup. Born in this country, Andrew was raised in South Africa but returned to England to follow his passion and become a professional golfer.

Many great Professional golfers have graced the course over the years, including Harold Hilton, Norma Von Nida, Dai Rees, Max Faulkner, Harry Weetman, and, of course, more recently European Tour Pro Paul Eales. Paul played, often, at West Derby as a top county amateur and returns each year to play in an exhibition match with our Professional, the Junior Captain and the winner of the Paul Eales' trophy, which he kindly donated. He is a great example to our youngsters and never too busy to answer questions.
